Capture the Holiday Browsers

It is a common misconception in the marine industry: "Wait until the sun comes out to sell your boat." While it seems logical to list your boat when the weather is fine, the data tells a different story.

At boatpoint, we often see a significant surge in online activity during the winter months. Here is why listing your boat before the Christmas decorations go up might be the smartest move you make all year.

1. Capture the "Holiday Dreamers"

The Christmas holidays are "Prime Research Time." While relaxing at home, buyers are scrolling through their phones, planning their summer, and setting resolutions. If your boat isn’t listed during this downtime, you miss out on the buyers falling in love with their next vessel from the comfort of their sofa.

2. Less Competition, More Visibility

Come April, the market is flooded with listings, and you have to fight for attention. Right now, inventory is naturally lower. By listing in winter, your boat becomes a "fresh catch" in a small pool, meaning significantly more views, clicks, and enquiries for your listing.

3. Serious Buyers Only

"Tyre kickers" prefer sunny days for a casual walk on the pontoons. Buyers viewing boats in December and January are motivated. They aren't looking for a day out; they are looking to buy now so they can spend the late winter prepping for a spring launch.

4. Get Ahead of the Logistics

A boat sale isn't instant - viewings, surveys, and sea trials take time.

  • List in Spring: You risk handing over keys mid-summer, missing half the season and paying extra storage.
  • List Now: You complete the admin during the downtime. The buyer gets a full season, and you stop paying berthing fees sooner.

5. Showcase Year-Round Comfort

There is something uniquely charming about a boat in winter, especially if you have a good heating system. It allows buyers to see the vessel as a comfortable, year-round retreat rather than just a fair-weather toy.
