When 'Cobalt' was commissioned, the first priority was security and safety at sea, hence the inevitable choice of the semi-displacement hull design. Size dictated the choice of the Arun hull designed by G.L Watson and further modified by the RNLI. A builder was chosen who would not only have the skills and necessary work priorities, but one with the experience to understand and emphasise detailed objectives - hence Halmatic and Camper & Nicholson were chosen. The boat was twelve months in the making at a cost in excess of £1.2 Million.
