Summary

‘Rival Venture’ is a good example of the capable offshore cruising yacht that is the Rival 34. Built in 1975 by Southern Boatbuilding Ltd to a Peter Brett design, she has been in the same hands since 2001. During this time, she has sailed extensively around UK waters and is now looking for new custodians to take her on further voyages.
Although original, the inboard Volvo offers reliability and economy. Down below is comfortable and offers berths for 6 persons over the fore cabin and saloon.

Mechanical

Vessel is powered by an inboard Volvo MD2 inboard diesel engine. This 18hp workhorse is situated beneath the removable companionway steps allowing access for daily checks and servicing. The engine is well maintained and has an annual service. This was completed shortly before lift out.
Single lever engine control inset into cockpit mouldings. Engine start panel mounted beneath the companionway entrance in cockpit with rev counter, fuel gauge and visual and audible lights for oil pressure, water temperature and charging.
Reduction gearbox driving a stainless steel shaft with 3-bladed bronze propeller. Propeller shaft is protected by a moulded skeg.
Full set of engine spares including alternator.

Electrical

12/240V systems on board with bank of 2x12V batteries providing engine start and domestic power. The 12V side was rewired in 2016 with new switch panels and gauges installed. 240V power available when connected to pontoon electrics via a shore power cable. 3-Pin sockets at galley and chart table. Battery isolator switch.

Rigging

Masthead Bermudan sloop rigged yacht with decks stepped aluminium spars and boom. Mainsheet track with car in cockpit. Roller furling headsail system with cockpit mounted self-tailing sheet winches. Stainless steel standing rigging and terylene running rigging. Spinnaker track mounted on front of mast. Spinnaker pole with associated rigging.

Accommodation

Below decks is both bright and airy but has a warm welcoming appeal thanks to the interior teak cabinet work. Saloon is entered via the companionway sliding hatch and washboard system. Excellent headroom through out and good visibility thanks to the numerous windows. To port is the galley are with plentiful hull mounted storage cabinets. Easy clean formica work tops with top loading ice box and stainless steel sink with pressurised hot and cold water. New water pump 2024. Flavel Vanessa gas fuelled oven with 2-burner hob and grill.
Opposite the galley is the forward-facing chart table. The seat forms the forward end of the quarter berth. Chart storage, 12V switch panel and space for navigation aids.
Saloon seating area with offset table on port side and further settee/berth opposite. Hull mounted storage cupboards port and starboard.
Starboard settee/berth fitted with lee cloth. Occasional pipe cot situated above port side seating.
In the bow is the forepeak with twin berths. Storage below. Between the saloon and the forepeak is a heads compartment on the port side with Lavac sea toilet, pull out sink and shower. Heads fitted with privacy door.
Opposite the heads is a hanging space.

Construction

GRP constructed sailing yacht with skeg mounted rudder, encapsulated fin keel and tiller steering. Underwater areas antifouled annually. Hull was epoxy treated as a preventative measure back in the late 1990’s. Hull topsides finished in white gel coat and moulded GRP fender. Stainless steel bow fitting Anchor storage locker mounted on port bow. Stainless steel mooring bollard.
Deep cockpit with Treadmaster topped solid nylon locker tops. Teak cockpit grate. Plentiful storage lockers.
Stainless steel bow and stern rails conjoined by stainless steel stanchions and guardwires.
